The link, while it lives, presents a far better and more complete detailing of the life of Jerry Leiber, along with songwriting partner Mike Stoller, than I could possibly write. His passing is the passing of a part of music history, particularly of Blues and Rock music history. Once the link is dead, I suggest Wikipedia and the Leiber-Stoller biography, "Hound Dog."
