Life's Intersections:
In recent months, circumstances led me down memory lane, in search of people I have met at life's intersections. People you might know, if not by name, then by the music they helped create. The fifth of five is Jim Mack.
Jim Mack:
It took a while to make sense, because I was a little shocked. I decided to join the Jacksonville Freelance Writers’ Group, headed by its founder, Deborah Hansen. My first meeting, she asked new members to introduce ourselves. One new fellow was Jim Mack, who mentioned he is a drummer. That not all. He was the session drummer for B. J. Thomas on his hit “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head." Jim Mack has been B. J.’s touring drummer twice in his career.
Local Entertainer:
Now, Jim Mack, Master Drummer, is living and working in Jacksonville, Florida. Jim Mack also does Paranormal Research. Listening to him, I could understand why he might want to write, although he came as a guest, at the urging of another member. This proved to be the only meeting he attended.
As Writer:
Jim Mack showed how songwriting and music skills enhanced his ability as a creative writer. In two brief writing drills Deborah Hansen posed to us, his work proved articulate and well-informed, as literature. His website reveals him to be a Master Drummer, something I've never heard of before. He is talented in Martial Arts, and as hinted earlier, is a professional investigator of the Paranormal. All these experiences aide him as a writer, which I am sure helps his songwriting too.
Intersection of Suspense and Plot:
The intersection for our meeting was a Writers' Group. The intersection of Suspense and Plot, if you like. Verbal greetings replaced the shake-hands greeting, yet it remains a fascinating meeting. The light of a star professional drummer intersected with my life. Yet haven't I known Jim Mack, Master Drummer, for years, without realizing it? Our meeting left me with some real writing food for thought. (Check out Jim Mack's website. He's a fascinating fellow, whose surface I hardly scratched here.)
